Retina Display vs 1080p Laptop 12: What You Need to Know Before Buying a Laptop

MacBook Air features a new, strikingly thin design in four beautiful finishes, larger 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, 1080p HD camera, MagSafe charging, and moreM2 also comes to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with 24GB of fast unified memory, ProRes acceleration, and up to 20 hours of battery life

In practice, thus far Apple has converted a device's display to Retina by doubling the number of pixels in each direction, quadrupling the total resolution. This increase creates a sharper interface at the same physical dimensions. The sole exception to this has been the iPhone 6 Plus, 6S Plus, 7 Plus, and 8 Plus, which renders its display at triple the number of pixels in each direction, before down-sampling to a 1080p resolution.

Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, has challenged Apple's claim. He says that the physiology of the human retina is such that there must be at least 477 pixels per inch in a pixelated display for the pixels to become imperceptible to the human eye at a distance of 12 inches (305 mm).[29] Astronomer and science blogger Phil Plait notes, however, that, "if you have [better than 20/20] eyesight, then at one foot away the iPhone 4S's pixels are resolved. The picture will look pixelated. If you have average eyesight [20/20 vision], the picture will look just fine... So in my opinion, what Jobs said was fine. Soneira, while technically correct, was being picky."[30] The retinal neuroscientist Bryan Jones offers a similar analysis of more detail and comes to a similar conclusion: "I'd find Apple's claims stand up to what the human eye can perceive."[31]

The first smartphone following the iPhone 4 to ship with a display of a comparable pixel density was the Nokia E6, running Symbian Anna, with a resolution of 640 480 at a screen size of 62.5mm. This was an isolated case for the platform however, as all other Symbian-based devices had larger displays with lower resolutions. Some older Symbian smartphones, including the Nokia N80 and N90, featured a 2.1 inch display at 259 ppi, which was one of the sharpest at the time. The first Android smartphones with the same display - Meizu M9 was launched a few months later in beginning of 2011. In October of the same year Galaxy Nexus was announced, which had a display with a better resolution. By 2013 the 300+ ppimark was found on midrange phones such as the Moto G.[36] From 2013 to 2014, many flagship devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One (M8) had 1080p (FHD) screens around 5-inches for a 400+ PPI which surpassed the Retina density on the iPhone 5. The second major redesign of the iPhone, the iPhone 6, has a 1334 750 resolution on a 4.7-inch screen, while rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 have a QHD display of 2560 1440 resolution, close to four times the number of pixels found in the iPhone 6, giving the S6 a 577 PPI that is almost twice that of the iPhone 6's 326 PPI.[37] The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium launched in late 2015 had 806 PPI.

HiDPI (High Dots Per Inch) displays, also known by Apple's "Retina Display" marketing name, are screens with a high resolution in a relatively small format. They are mostly found in high-end laptops and monitors.

Firefox should use the #GDK 3 (GTK 3) settings. However, the suggested GDK_SCALE suggestion does not consistently scale the entirety of Firefox, and does not work for fractional values (e.g., a factor of 158DPI/96DPI = 1.65 for a 1080p 14" laptop). You may want to use GDK_DPI_SCALE instead. Another option, which will avoid Firefox-specific settings in many setups is to use the settings in #X Resources as Firefox should respect the Xft.dpi value defined there.

Play the most visually impressive games at their maximum settings. Animate, develop, create, and game comfortably on a 4K OLED or 1080p matte display. Combine that with a graphics boost of NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti and 3080 Ti and a soft-touch, springy keyboard for a truly satisfying experience.

This Apple MacBook Air (2018) laptop comes with Intel Core i5 Dual-core processor with 1.6GHz speed, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. It has a 13.3 inch LED-backlit display screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. The laptop has interfaces like USB ports, HDMI, bluetooth, HD camera, stereo speakers. It comes with macOS Mojave and 1.25 kg in weight.

The stylus, which comes included with the Spectre, now attached to the side of the display, similar to Microsoft's Surface, making for a familiar and easy-to-reach location whether you use the device as a laptop or a tablet.

The MacBook Air with M2 is arguably Apple's biggest change to the lineup since it launched, eschewing the historical wedge design for a thinner, flatter look. It's the first MacBook Air to be designed for Apple Silicon, and it sure makes a statement. But there are a slew of other important changes. The M2 chip is powerful and long-lasting; the display is bright and vivid; MagSafe, the magnetic power connector, has returned; and there's a 1080p webcam, which is a huge improvement, though it's in a notch.

You don't have to spend over $1,000 to get a good clamshell notebook. The HP Pavilion can get you the latest Intel processor, 16GB of RAM of a 90 Hz, 2880 x 1800 OLED display. You can go lower for the same design, but with a Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a non-OLED screen. We liked the Pavilion for its great port selection, lovely screen and strong performance, all at a value price. The battery life could use some work, but we tested with OLED, and that sucks up battery. The ports include two USB Type-C ports, two USB Type-A ports, HDMI, a headphone jack and a microSD card reader. The laptop is made from a mix of aluminum and plastic, giving you a bit of the premium feel you get in more expensive notebooks, even if the design is a bit bland.

The MSI GE76 Raider is our pick for a gaming laptop that can replace your desktop. And yes, it has a massive RGB light bar. It offers seriously strong performance with components ranging up to an Intel Core i9-11980HK and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080.The 17.3-inch display is bright and goes up to 360 Hz, for those who want to play esports titles like Dota 2 or League of Legends as smoothly as possible. But unlike many of the other laptops on this list, the Raider is not thin. In fact, it's quite large, but you need that for all of the power inside (and for the 17.3-inch build quality). If you want something smaller, the GE66 Raider, our former pick for this spot, which we reviewed last year, has also been updated to more recent parts.Read: MSI GE76 Raider Review

HP has built the modern work laptop. The Elite Dragonfly Gen 3 is light, stylish, with a tall 3:2 display and a long-lasting battery that lasted 14 hours on our tests. The Gen 3 drops the 2-in-1 design, so if you're married to your stylus, you might want to look elsewhere. But HP has taken great advantage of the space on the chassis, including two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI 2.0, a headphone jack and even a USB Type-A port with a drop-jaw hinge. For business users, that last port is still key for tons of peripherals and external storage.HP has opted to use Intel's 12th Gen U series chips, which means you don't get the best performance, but for most white-collar needs, it should get the job done. It is also likely a contributor to the long battery life. The one catch? It's pricey. We've seen the price fluctuating, but if you can get your job to get one for you, that may be the best way to go.Read: HP Elite Dragonfly G3 review

With the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13, the company has taken a more modern approach to the business laptop. The Z13 still has the ethos of a ThinkPad, is unmistakably meant to be one, but with the option for a faux leather lid, classy bronze accents and a haptic touchpad, it feels like a leap forward in design. We also got just under 14 hours of battery life with the 1920 x 1200 display, which means you can easily get through a day of work. 2ff7e9595c
